Preventive Measures to Take on Major Threats to Your Home

by Jess Rehll - January 6, 2022

For the vast majority of us, a home is the single most expensive purchase we will ever make. A home provides shelter from the elements and a place to belong in this world. It’s where families are built and memories are made. Homes are worth protecting. It’s hard to protect something if you don’t know what you’re protecting it from, however, so here are a few things to watch out for!

Fires

You might be surprised by just how quickly a house fire spreads. House fires are more than just dangerous, they’re deadly. It’s crucial to take steps to prevent them from happening in the first place. Start by making sure that you have smoke alarms in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, on each level of your home, near stairways, and in the living room, den, or family room (or even all of them). Make sure they work and that they have functioning batteries in them. Test your smoke alarms regularly.

Water Damage

Water can also do extensive damage to a home. Flooding can be a huge threat to a home, which is why some homes have things like well pumps. A well pump moves water out of your home to prevent flooding damage. Not all water damage is done by something as dramatic as flooding, though. Leaky pipes and roofs, as well as faulty seals can also be the source of water damage. Mold growth and weakened structural components can threaten your health and safety if left unchecked. Have your plumbing and roof inspected on a regular basis to make sure everything is in good condition.

Theft

Not all threats to your home come from the elements or natural disasters. Some come from other people. You don’t have to live in fear of someone breaking into your home and robbing you blind, though. Take steps to keep your home well-lit and open so would-be thieves are afraid of exposure. If you choose to have a home security system installed, be sure to carefully weigh the pros and cons of each of your options before moving forward.

A house is so much more than a building when it becomes someone’s home. Everything that structure stands for means it has value beyond its market price. Take steps to prevent these and other major threats that your home could face so that you can continue to enjoy the safety and security it provides for as long as you live there.
