Items That Can Clog Your Kitchen Drain

by Jess Rehll - December 2, 2021

A clogged drain isn’t fun for anyone. It can be a gross experience to deal with, can lead to a bad smell in your house, and can cause further plumbing problems if you don’t get it taken care of as soon as possible. The best course of action is to avoid putting potential problems down the drain in the first place. There are many things that can be damaging to your drain, and a lot of them will come as a surprise to most homeowners.

Starchy Foods

The problem with starchy foods is that when they are combined with water in your drain, they become sticky and gooey and are pretty difficult to get out. As those starches build up over time, it can become even more difficult to take care of them properly. Instead of putting these kinds of foods down your drain it is better to throw them away in the trash. This is true even if you have a garbage disposal that you can use, since it won’t be able to completely take care of the goop that the starches become in the drain.

Grease and Oil

Most people know that you shouldn’t put fat down the drain, but it is still worth talking about. Having grease go down your drain can cause serious issues and even block up your system so that you need to call in some professional help. This is also true of oil because pouring oil down your sink can lead to serious plumbing issues. Disposing of your oil in a container in the trash is a much better way to get rid of it that won’t cause additional issues for your plumbing.

Whether you have a garbage disposal or not, it is never a good idea to put eggshells down your drain. It is important to realize that eggshells can dull the blades of your garbage disposal. Or, if you don’t have a garbage disposal, they can end up blocking your pipes because they are large and can clump together, despite being lightweight.

By avoiding putting the wrong things down your drain, you can make sure that your drain is in good condition and that your pipes will continue to do their job well. It can also save you the money you would spend on a plumber. While finding other ways to dispose of certain items can be a pain, sometimes it is worth the struggle.
