Cleaning Up After a Home Improvement Project

by Jess Rehll - February 3, 2020

A home renovation project can produce a wonderful final product, but there are a lot of messes that come with this process. When the work is finally done and the workers have gone home, you’re left with the cleanup. You can choose to hire a professional cleaning company to take care of the problem for you, but you can also tackle the job on your own. If you decide on the latter, there are some things that you should watch out for.

The Bathroom

A bathroom is a very small space, but having renovations done there can leave behind quite the mess. There are a lot of small cracks and crevices that you’ll need to clean out. Make sure that you have the right tools needed to get everything spotless. A variety of sponges, brushes, and cloths can ensure you get into all those tight spots. Use products that are designed for the different materials in your bathroom. Grout, tubs, tiles, and wood all need different products in order to preserve their integrity.

The Kitchen

Any layout changes that may occur to your kitchen can expose some pretty big cleaning issues. Spots that haven’t been exposed in years will surface. You should also make sure that appropriate areas have been sealed off correctly by the contractor. This is a part of the home that sees a lot of water, crumbs, etc. Check to see if there is a gap around the dishwasher. Check and wipe down all surfaces, including the flooring and cabinets.

Hopefully, you have taken steps to protect your bedrooms while the work was being done. If the work extended into those rooms, bedding should have been packed away properly for the time being. You can wash everything before returning it to the bed. Make sure you wipe down furniture that remained in the room because it couldn’t be moved. Remember to wipe down the baseboards as well. A lot of dust can accumulate during construction.

If furniture was properly covered, it should be pretty clear of construction dust and debris. However, you can clean your couches and chairs with a good vacuuming. Use the attachments that came with your vacuum in order to get into crevices.

It might seem overwhelming to clean up your home after a big construction job. While you might be very happy with how everything turned out, there’s probably a mess that you’re not so thrilled about. If you don’t even know where to begin, let a professional take over the job.
